What Is Teeth Whitening Treament All About?

It just so happens that, due to no fault of our own, our teeth become stained and yellow in colour. Food consumption, drinking red wine or coffee or smoking cigarettes can result in teeth losing their natural sparkle and colour and this can call for a teeth whitening treatment. Teeth whitening treatments are available to help people with discoloured teeth feel better about their appearance. The cosmetic treatment removes stains and discolouration and lightens the shade of teeth using peroxide: either carbamide peroxide (CP) or hydrogen peroxide (HP).

Varieties of Teeth Whitening Treatment

There are two options available to people who want teeth whitening treatment: over-the-counter kits and in-chair whitening treatment. Over-the-counter treatments can be bought from your local chemist. They involve attaching two adhesive strips to the upper and lower teeth for an hour and then activating the primary chemical ingredient with a UV light. Rose Dental recommends you book an appointment for in-chair teeth whitening if you want to improve the shade of your teeth, however. Over-the-counter teeth whitening kits can wear down enamel if they are not applied properly and don’t last as long as in-chair treatments.

How Do In-Chair Teeth Whitening Treatments Work?

After you call to book an appointment and come into the clinic, your local dentist will diagnose the condition of your teeth. Depending on their colour and the presence of any stains, your dentist will choose a particular product to use. They will place a protective shield over your gums to ensure they are not irritated by the peroxide solution. The whitening agent is then applied to your teeth. It will then either catalyse with the oxygen in the air or with a special UV light and become activated, whitening and brightening your teeth.

Are There Any Risks Associated With In-Chair Teeth Whitening?

Peroxide can act as a mild irritant if not applied properly. Teeth whitening treatment can leave your teeth feeling sensitive and your gums and mouth tissue irritated for a day or two following treatment. Other than this, though, the treatment is harmless and won’t do any damage to the enamel on your teeth. The only other risk of receiving teeth whitening treatment is if you have a crown or dentures. The treatment won’t work on dental implants and therefore crowns or dentures should be replaced with another implant to ensure your teeth are all the same colour.
