What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a small titanium post(screw like) that is inserted into the jawbone. This post serves as the foundation for a replacement tooth or bridge. Once the implant is in place, it fuses with the jawbone, providing a strong and stable anchor for the replacement tooth. Dental implants are an excellent option for those who have lost teeth due to injury, decay, or other issues.
Dental implants are often recommended for patients with one or more missing teeth or when a tooth cannot be saved. It is an artificial tooth root that looks like a metal screw and is placed into the jawbone where the missing tooth and its structure was originally located. Over time, the jawbone will nourish, surround the implant and secure the screw in place, a process that takes up to a few months.
The implant fixture (screw) will then be accompanied by an implant crown, which fills the space in the mouth left by the missing tooth. The crown is custom-made to match the shape and color of the surrounding teeth. The implant crown is generally completed three months after the screw is placed to ensure the healing process is going smoothly. Dental implants are ideal for patients who are looking to achieve aesthetically pleasing results while also maintaining functionality.
Advantages of Dental Implants
There are many positives to having dental implants:
- They look and feel like your natural teeth.
- They require the same care as your natural teeth.
- The dental implant will NOT affect the surrounding teeth.
- They prevent bone loss.
- They are more secure than removable dentures.
- They are a long-term solution.
What if I need to replace more than one tooth?
A single tooth replacement only requires one dental screw and one dental crown. However, if you require a replacement of two or more teeth, our dentist will recommend an implant bridge. An implant bridge includes two or more implant screws placed in the jawbone and are conjoined by an artificial bridge made of dental crowns that are then connected side by side!
What makes me a good candidate for a dental implant?
Certain factors need to be assessed before our dentist suggests proceeding with a dental implant. During an appointment, our dentist will take a scan to determine if there is enough bone present in the jaw for the implant screw to be placed in.
How should I care for my dental implant?
Dental implants cannot develop tooth decay, but they are not free from gum disease. The surrounding tissue and bone of the implant can experience inflammation and bone loss, a condition called peri-implantitis. Therefore, it is crucial to brush down to the level of the gums and floss in between the implant and its neighbouring teeth. It is also essential to attend regular dental check-ups so our dentist may monitor the tissue around the implant!
