Wisdom Teeth Extraction

The four wisdom teeth (otherwise known as third molars) typically erupt between the age of 17 and 25, and they are the last teeth to erupt. It is not uncommon for the wisdom teeth to cause issues such as tooth decay and crowding, and in some cases wisdom teeth may be impacted. In these cases, wisdom tooth extraction is often necessary to reduce the risk of experiencing serious dental complications.

Rose Dental provide Wisdom Teeth Extraction at our Five Dock dental clinic. An initial evaluation and X-ray of the wisdom teeth is typically done at around the age of 15-19, at which stage your dentist will be able to determine and monitor the status of the wisdom teeth.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction is performed under anaesthetic, and your dentist will discuss sedation options prior to extraction to ensure your comfort. The extraction process is typically straightforward, and your dentist will walk you through the process and expected timeframes for treatment and healing.

When is Wisdom Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Common observances and symptoms that may necessitate wisdom tooth extraction include:

  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth – a lack of space can prevent the wisdom teeth from fully emerging, or they may grow at an angle. This can cause swollen and tender gums, along with jaw pain. The risk of infection is also much greater.
  • Tooth Decay – as the wisdom teeth are located at the back of the jaw, they are difficult to clean. This increases the risk of tooth decay.
  • Cheek Ulcers – Wisdom teeth may rub against the cheek, causing painful ulcers.
  • Crowding – if wisdom teeth come through at an angle, they can press against adjacent teeth and push them out of alignment. This can affect the appearance of your smile.
  • Pain – it is not uncommon for wisdom teeth to be quite painful as they are emerging. Ongoing pain is abnormal, and you should seek an examination and X-ray from your dentist as soon as possible.
